I would like to suggest a name change for all the "filter" functions. The
action for these is really a "convert" as it says in the text. Why not use
the specific term convert instead of the generic filter.

As someone with an engineering background, scientists and engineers do not
see format conversion as a filtering function at all. To me a filter is
still something that removes unwanted stuff from the useful substance, like
a low pass filer on your sound system or a coffee filter.

Just a suggestion.
