I/O Chapter Updates & Jan Meeting Agenda

The next release of the MPI-2 document will include an updated
I/O chapter which addresses the comments and proposals since
the October '96 meeting. I did not have time to include
Nick Maclaren's "Sequential I/O" proposal, but I think we
should make some time to talk about it at the meeting next week.

Summary of changes to the I/O Chapter:

a. PROPOSAL: MPI_Preallocate & associated changes in MPI_Resize

b. PROPOSAL: "Interleaved Collective Operations" semantics

c. PROPOSAL: Error handlers for MPI_File

d. PROPOSAL: "Miscellaneous Clarifications" in Semantics section

e. Edited Filetype Constructor section; minor changes

f. PROPOSAL: File locking via amode

g. Assorted small changes marked by January change bars.

Additional agenda items for discussion at the January meeting:

h. MISSING: Canonical Data Representation

i. MISSING: Portable type constructors for holes, e.g. is it
possible to portably specify a hole of 3 integers?

j. MISSING: Proposal for mandatory info, or a statement that
implementations cannot require particular info.

k. MISSING: Statement of fairness semantics

l. PROPOSAL: Make MPI_File_get_type_size/extent consistent
with MPI-1 MPI_Type_size/extent. [John May]

m. PROPOSAL: Directory manipulation routines (e.g. chdir) [Kim Yates]

n. PROPOSAL: "Sequential I/O" [Nick Maclaren]

Please send me additional agenda items as well as any proposed
new text for discussion (i.e. how's that canonical representation
coming along?).
