Succinct I/O Subcommittee Minutes: 17-19 July 1996

See the July draft document for details on the various proposals.

Basic Proposals
---------------
PROPOSAL #1: Add non-blocking MPI_IOPEN Pass: 7/4/1
PROPOSAL #2: Add non-blocking MPI_ICLOSE Maybe: 5/5/2
PROPOSAL #3: Add non-blocking MPI_IFILE_SYNC Fail: 2/3/7
PROPOSAL #4: Add info/hints to MPI_CLOSE Withdrawn
PROPOSAL #5: Add APPEND mode to MPI_OPEN Awaits full proposal
PROPOSAL #6: Finite count of filetypes to tile a file Awaits full proposal
PROPOSAL #7: Make all READ/WRITE routines collective Withdrawn
PROPOSAL #8: Support for "non-local" I/O services Awaits full proposal
Proposal #9: Add I/O Scheduling Hints Fail: 1/10/1

Simplified Open Proposals
-------------------------
PROPOSAL A: Split MPI_OPEN into MPI_OPEN and MPI_VIE Pass: 13/0/2
PROPOSAL B: Rename READ/WRITE routines to UNIX look and feel Pass: 13/1/0
PROPOSAL C: Add filetype to the READ/WRITE routines Fail: 0/10/4
PROPOSAL D: Add persistent READ/WRITE routines Awaits proposal
PROPOSAL E: Make displacement implicitly based on MPI_VIEW Awaits proposal

File Interoperability
---------------------
Interoperability within a single MPI implementation is already guaranteed.

Ability to access data across off-line on-line
(1) Applications Pass: 14/0/0
(2) Hardware platforms Pass: 10/1/3 Fail: 3/9/2 (via C)
(3) Filesystem interfaces Pass: 7/4/3 (via A) Pass: 8/3/2 (via B)
(4) MPI implementations Pass: 8/5/1 (via C) Fail: 1/8/5

Possible implementations:
(A) Require off-line conversion utilities
(B) Require POSIX compatible file structure
(C) Require XDR-like data format
(D) Require self-describing files/metadata Fail: 1/11/2

A full proposal combining A, B, and C is forthcoming.

Other Topics
------------
The current definition of EOF is wrong and needs to be refined.

What is the value of data in file areas covered by holes (e.g. UNIX
zero fills holes).

What happens to outstanding requests after CLOSE? After FINALIZE?
