I see that you are considering a different functionality --
an extremely hard and convoluted one at that!
I will send a proposal to this group for a function to compliment
MPI_GET_CHAR_DATATYPE (in Steve's current proposal) along with
a straight forward implementation. Look for it at the end of this week.
