In option 3 (functions to decode the opaque information), isn't the
negative given (opaque information potentially inconsistent if you break
in a bad place) also a negative in option 2 (shadow information)?
And isn't it a problem that needs to be solved anyway if MPI is to work
in a threaded environment? That is, MPI calls need to be made thread
safe.
