I/O Datarep Clarification: "re-entrant (thread-safe)"

In I/O section 10.5.3 User Defined Data Representations,
my notes say that the following requirement of the user-defined
data conversion callbacks should be clarified. The text said:

"The filter functions must be re-entrant (thread-safe)."

Can anyone recall the problem (and, hopefully, the proposed
solution)?
