Marc, my immediate concern is not whether the design will work well, it is
simply whether it will work as we are saying that it should work. I'm not
claiming that there are in fact any real problems, I'm just saying that I'm
nervous. For example, we now appear to be relying very heavily on this
abstraction of local vs. global memory. My concern is that we may
unintentionally mandate semantics that actually *require* this distinction in
implementations, which would obviously be a Bad Thing.

Directives which change semantics bother me as well.
